Drunk driving charges in college: A mistake can really haunt you

Heavy workloads, exhausting schedules, financial stress, the pressure to maintain a social life and keep your grades up -- all the while keeping an eye on the job market ahead -- can put anyone on edge.

Is it any wonder, then, that college students sometimes make a mistake and up behind the wheel after they've had a few too many drinks?

How it happens

A lot of college students seem to overestimate how much they can drink and still be sober enough to drive. They may also fool themselves into believing that it's just a short trip from the bar to the dorm and feel like they're "safe" on the road because the path is so familiar to them.

Unfortunately, police know what nights are party nights -- and staking out the campus makes for easy busts.

What it can do

A drunk driving charge can turn a college student's life upside down in ways that are both common to anyone caught in that situation and unique to those still in school:

  • You face the potential of jail time -- which could cause you to miss classes and exams -- forcing you to retake (a pay for all over again) the same classes.
  • You may not be able to move until you've completed any sentence, which could halt your dreams if you had plans of moving on immediately after graduation.
  • You could lose your driving privileges for a length of time.
  • More than likely, the school will learn about the drunk driving charge -- it's a matter of public record and police generally provide universities the information anyhow.
  • You can lose any scholarships that you have. Many have a morality clause.
  • You can lose your right to stay in campus housing due to a criminal record.
  • Job hunting may become far more difficult upon graduation.
  • You might not -- ever -- be able to go into your intended field due to a conviction.

If you've been charged with drunk driving, it isn't unusual to be scared and unsure of what to do next. First, find a lawyer with experience handling these types of claims. Our law firm handles a significant number of drunk driving charges involving college students, and we're well aware of how important the outcome of your case is to your future.
