New Jersey driver charged with DWI after hitting tree

A 32-year-old New Jersey man is facing drunk driving charges after slamming his car into a tree on Route 9 in Galloway on Feb. 4. The crash occurred around 1:38 p.m. near Somerstown Lane, according to the Galloway Township Police.

Authorities said they were dispatched to the scene in response to a report that a vehicle crashed into a tree. Officers found the defendant, who was allegedly disoriented, behind the wheel of a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. Investigators said it appeared he had been driving southbound on Route 9 when he crossed the center line, left the roadway, struck several bushes and collided with a tree. The accident delayed area traffic for approximately 45 minutes as crews cleared the scene and performed an investigation.

The defendant, who is an Egg Harbor Township resident, was treated at the scene of the crash by the Galloway Township Ambulance Squad. He was then taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for further medical care. After his release, he was charged with DWI and several other driving violations. A court date is pending.

While being charged with driving while intoxicated can result in very serious penalties, not everyone is convicted. A criminal defense attorney could examine the evidence in the case and recommend defense strategies that may help the defendant. In some cases, the evidence may be weak or unreliable. For example, a blood alcohol content test showing results within the test's known margin of error could be challenged in court. It might also be possible for an attorney to negotiate with prosecutors to mitigate the most serious charges in exchange for a guilty plea or voluntary participation in an alcohol treatment program.
