2 men arrested after alleged drug deal

Two New Jersey men were taken into custody after allegedly engaging in a drug deal in Bayonne on Feb. 5. The incident took place at approximately 10:23 p.m. near West 18th Street and Broadway.

According to Bayonne police, detectives conducting surveillance in the area observed a 58-year-old man approach a double-parked car driven by a 33-year-old man. The two men allegedly completed a drug transaction and then left the scene separately.

The man in the car was pulled over for a traffic stop at 19th Street and Broadway. Officers discovered he was wanted on two warrants in Bayonne and reportedly placed him under arrest. A search of his vehicle turned up $348 in cash and 102 packets of heroin.

Detectives supposedly watched the other man walk to an address on Kennedy Boulevard where he met a third man and then left. He was apprehended at Kennedy Boulevard and 20th Street. He allegedly had $70 in cash and 36 packets of heroin in his possession at the time of his arrest.

The defendants were each charged with heroin possession and possession within 500 feet of a park. Bail was set at $75,000 in cash for both men. The 36-year-old's Bayonne warrants were for $5,000 and $250.

Anyone charged with drug possession can face harsh consequences, including lengthy incarceration, if they are convicted. It may be beneficial for anyone facing drug charges to retain a lawyer as soon as possible. A criminal defense attorney could provide guidance when a client is questioned by police and work to protect the defendant's rights at all times. An attorney could also examine police conduct during the arrest for any signs they overstepped their authority. If, for example, officers did not follow proper procedures as they searched the defendant, any evidence found could be deemed inadmissible in court.
