New Jersey man pleads guilty to driving while intoxicated

A New Jersey man accused of drunk driving recently pleaded guilty to criminal charges. The 55-year-old man pleaded guilty on multiple counts of assault and confessed that he was drunk and driving while intoxicated at the time of an unfortunate crash that injured three people. News of his guilty plea was released by the acting prosecutor for Middlesex County.

Police investigators apparently concluded that the man was driving a 2012 Mercedes when he lost control and crossed a double yellow line before hitting an oncoming sport utility vehicle. A 57-year-old woman, who was operating the SUV, was airlifted to a hospital, where she received treatment for severe injuries. Another passenger in the woman’s car, a 31-year-old man, also required hospital treatment for serious injuries. Another 31-year-old woman, who was driving behind the sport utility vehicle, was also hospitalized.

The man who caused the accident agreed to plead guilty as part of a plea agreement. His sentencing hearing is scheduled to occur on Sept. 4. As a result of his guilty plea, he could be sentenced to spend as much as five years in prison.

Plea bargaining arrangements are common in New Jersey criminal court proceedings. If an individual has been accused of driving while intoxicated, for example, and the evidence is particularly strong against the accused person, pleading guilty could be a way to secure a reduced sentence or other favorable treatment from the court. In other cases, an accused individual might plead guilty to less severe charges in a plea arrangement that allows for his or her more serious charges to be dropped. Each criminal case is unique and requires focus on the specifics of the charges as well as the evidence that prosecutors intend to offer in court.
