New Jersey man charged with drunk driving after hitting cop car

New Jersey authorities allege that a man who ran his vehicle into a police car was drunk. Police further indicate that the struck officer was injured in the incident. The crash occurred earlier in 2014, but it was not until Monday that the driver turned himself into authorities after being charged with drunk driving, reckless driving and assault by auto.

The man — who is from Egg Harbor Township — surrendered to police in Hamilton Township on June 16. In their charges against the man, police say that the 41-year-old driver was traveling along Route 40 at the time the accident occurred in April. Allegedly, the man lost control of his car, passed over into oncoming traffic and collided with a police vehicle.

The struck police car was being operated by a police officer from Hamilton. Now, some months after the incident, the officer is still trying to recover from his injuries. In addition to receiving the criminal charges, the accused man in this case also had his bail set at $20,000. At this time, no information has been released on whether he has obtained legal counsel to defend himself against the allegations he now faces.

Being charged with drunk driving in New Jersey could result in serious punishments if a conviction ultimately occurs. Nevertheless, the burden of proof will be placed on the prosecution and unless it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that a person is indeed guilty of the alleged crimes, the person will be able to obtain a verdict of not guilty. In other cases, where the evidence against the accused is particularly strong, he or she might consider entering a plea of guilty in exchange for a sentence reduction and other plea bargaining benefits.
