Social media may complicate divorce

The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words might be truer today than it ever was. New Jersey residents may know the items posted on social media not only persist but tell a tale for everyone to hear. If this occurs during a divorce, it might result in both financial and custodial problems.

Experts confirm that a remark made in anger may be captured and used to portray the person in an unfair light. Once a picture or a remark is posted, it is difficult to recall, and deleting it may not help. If someone saw it and took a screenshot, it is documented. The option of blocking an ex-spouse and mutual friends is onerous.

An angry dissertation on social media may have enormous repercussions. The statement might potentially be used to insinuate the speaker is not just bitter but incapable of providing a fair view of the other spouse when children are involved.

Childcare might be judged on social media posts that show children behaving in an unacceptable or potentially dangerous way. For example, a young person might post a picture intimating they were drinking. This might be devastating for the parent on whose watch it was.

Expensive purchases or extravagant vacations are often shared on social media. If the picture paints the person in a light that goes against what they portrayed as their financial situation, it might be presented as proof of a fraudulent claim.

The pitfall of providing statements or pictures that may be taken out of context might complicate divorce and child custody. An attorney may offer insight into ways this might be avoided.
