New Jersey drug charges: Did father use toddler as drug mule?

A New Jersey man was recently arrested and accused of hiding drugs in his toddler's clothing. Allegedly, the child was found at a daycare center with 48 packets of heroin in his clothing. The 27-year-old father was subsequently taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. It may well be that drug charges will also be filed as the case proceeds.

After the 27-year-old father was apprehended by police, he was booked into jail. As of March 12, he was still being held on bail of $85,000. Should the man succeed in posting bail, he will be released from custody while he faces the criminal charges in a courtroom.

Police claim that one of the daycare's teachers contacted them and reported finding the drugs in the toddler's jacket. The school has chosen not to comment on the incident. Parents, however, have expressed their worries and concerns regarding the drugs and the subsequent arrest. One mother made strong statements against the school for failing to notify parents regarding the incident. She also did not appreciate the manner in which the director responded to her own personal concerns.

New Jersey parents who are facing drug charges or related accusations may be at risk of losing their parental rights. Especially if a mother or father is charged with drug offenses and later convicted of those charges, he or she may be stripped of parental rights and end up serving time in jail. Parents accused of crimes, however, can defend themselves against the allegations in court, and they will not be punished criminally unless they are first proved to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
