New Jersey traffic stop ends with drug charges

Police officers are often assigned routine tasks such as watching for speeders and other minor traffic violations. One such stop has resulted in a speeding violation accusation for a driver and drug charges for the car owner. The stop was made in the early morning hours in a New Jersey town.

A patrolman was monitoring for speeding violations when he reportedly noticed a vehicle traveling at a speed he believed was exceeding the posted limit. He made the stop and started toward the car. The driver was a 17-year-old male that had gotten out of the vehicle to meet the officer.

The officer alleges that he smelled a burning odor which he believed was coming from the car and that the smell was marijuana smoke. During the policeman's questioning he discovered that the owner of the car was a passenger in the rear seat. The officer alleged that the owner was trying to hide objects within the rear cushions. The patrolman reports that marijuana and associated materials, such as baggies and scales, were in the car.

The owner of the car was arrested on drug charges. The 20-year-old New Jersey man was released and is expected to appear for further legal proceedings in his case. This man has not been convicted of any crime at this point and he may, in fact, be proven innocent as the investigation into these allegations progresses. In any case, he may seek out information concerning what his rights are and how to proceed in order to arrive at the best resolution for him in this situation.
