Defense attorney secures favorable agreement in prostitution bust

Criminal defense is not always about defending innocence in New Jersey. Success in a criminal trial can come in varying degrees. When acquittal or having charges dropped is an unlikely outcome, a defense attorney can still work to fight for lesser charges and avoid the harshest consequences.

One 30-year-old woman was busted for running a prostitution business with the assistance of an insurance owner. The duo used an exercise studio as a front for a business in which money was exchanged for sex acts, which were sometimes filmed without consent of the clients. This business earned tens of thousands of dollars tax-free while the 30-year-old continued receiving welfare payments.

Prosecutors had collected an overwhelming amount of evidence against the two in the form of video footage, documents and recorded conversations. The woman faced a significant number of criminal charges and tough odds, but she sought the guidance of an experienced criminal defense attorney.

The attorney was able to reach an agreement where all 106 counts pertaining to the sex crimes and fraud against the woman were reduced to misdemeanors. Three of the reduced charges against the woman relating to fraud were originally felony charges that could have carried much harsher consequences for conviction.

The woman also agreed to pay almost $60,000 in restitution. Agreements like this are favorable for both sides because the defendant often sees reduced penalties, and the state saves in trial expenses. Accordingly, this woman could have faced serious time behind bars, but due to the plea agreement, the woman will only spend 10 months in prison.
