'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' in full force until Jan. 2

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in New Jersey is an effort aimed to decrease loss of life due to drunk drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 25 individuals across the country perishes each day in drunk driving accidents throughout the month of Dec. each year.

Accordingly, police in New Jersey and several other states crackdown on drunk driving throughout the month of Dec. with particular emphasis around New Year's Eve. New Jersey police will be out in increased numbers until Jan. 2 in aims of pulling drunk drivers of off the roads.

However, in their aim of promoting safety, police officers can act unlawfully, either by making an unlawful stop or an unlawful arrest. Therefore, a charged individual is not necessarily a convicted individual. However, a drunk driving conviction could mean a license suspension, mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device and heavy fines for just a first-time offense. If an individual is convicted and has a prior conviction, the individual could be sentenced to time behind bars.

Accordingly, it is imperative for a charged individual to analyze all of the evidence against them and the nature in which said evidence was collected. Individuals that are stopped on suspicion of driving while intoxicated would do well to speak with experienced legal counsel as soon as possible. Individuals are advised to remember that they do have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney if they should find themselves facing such circumstances.
