Ocean city residents walk to promote designated drivers

Over 2,000 walkers showed up a few weeks ago for Ocean City, New Jersey's, second annual HERO walk. The walk, which took place on the Ocean City Boardwalk, raised around $125,000 to go toward the effort to promote designated drivers in hopes of decreasing drunk driving accidents. A sea of walkers was visible along the boardwalk as participants enjoyed food, prizes and entertainment for a good cause.

The walk was established in memory of a New Jersey resident that graduated from Egg Harbor Township High School and enlisted in the Navy. The young man was awarded the outstanding Human Education Resource Officer (HERO) award for his class shortly before he was killed by a drunk driver in July 2000.

In addition to New Jersey, there are four other states that actively take part in The HERO Campaign. This is a noble cause that works to support a community in making the right decision. Using a designated driver instead of getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking will not only save an individual from serious consequences and possible jail time, but it could also save lives like the Egg Harbor Township resident that was killed.

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, it is important for drivers all across New Jersey to remember to excise discretion when drinking alcohol. If an individual is choosing to drink at festivities, it is important to have a safe method of transportation. Designated drivers are always a smart decision.
