New Jersey gets tough on drunk driving

New Jersey residents may have noticed an increase in the number of DUI arrests as of recent. This is because over 400 law enforcement agencies in the state are participating in an annual crack down on drunk driving, called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

Reportedly, there are several sobriety check points stationed in place across the state, as well as multiple saturation patrols. The crackdown began Aug. 17 and is set to run through Sept. 3 of this year. A significant amount of money has been allocated to cover the expenses of these increased patrols; about $4,400 of this money went to Ocean City Police Department.

Across the entirety of New Jersey during last year's campaign, a reported 1,473 DWI arrests were made. Additionally, because there are so many officers out on patrol, a large number of speeding and seatbelt tickets were issued as well.

With Labor Day quickly approaching, New Jersey residents are cautioned to use their judgment if drinking over the holiday and avoid getting behind the wheel. If residents should find themselves facing DUI charges, it is important to remember that they have the right to an attorney and they have the right to remain silent.

In New Jersey DUI/DWI charges are prosecuted in municipal courts without a jury, therefore it may be important to retain counsel familiar with local courts.
