Report states divorce rate is dropping

A good deal of people in New Jersey may consider it common knowledge that 50 percent of marriages in America end in divorce. However, a recent analysis of statistics reportedly indicates that the figure is inaccurate and that, further, the rate of divorce is actually dropping.

Authorities state that the unprecedentedly high divorce rates that led to the popular belief that half of all marriages fail to last could be attributed to cultural factors that effloresced in the 1970s, such as the feminism movement and the realization of women's reproductive rights. These factors challenged the construct of the institution of marriage and resulted in a major change in gender roles. As a consequence, the divorce rate increased, authorities say.

On the other hand, modern societal factors and cultural values may be contributing to the decreasing divorce rate. One important factor is that many people today are marrying at a later age. During the mid-20th century, the median age for women to enter into marriage was 20, reportedly. It was 23 for men during that era. At the turn of the new millennium, the median age among women was 26. Among men, it was 27.

Authorities suggest that this trend may result in more mature marriages, comprised of couples who are more economically established and sometimes already comfortable with living together. While this may increase a marriage's chance of enduring, the fact is that there will still be some couples whose marriage does not work, and they have the right to dissolve it.

The process of divorce can be complex. The stakes can be high. Yet, results can be highly satisfying, above all for individual spouses backed by the representation and advocacy of an attorney who has an experienced-based understanding of family law.
