New Jersey couple taken into custody for domestic dispute

According to Saddle Brook police, they responded to a report of a woman who allegedly stabbed her husband on the morning of August 8. The report of the alleged domestic violence incident came in just after 9 a.m. Officials say that a woman reportedly stabbed her husband in the neck. The woman was taken into custody on charges of illegal possession of a weapon and second-degree aggravated assault. The husband was taken to a medical center where he was treated for his injury and later released.

Officers questioned the pair separately and learned that the husband owned nearly 200 guns. Police say that he had the proper owner's permission, but refused to allow them to enter the residence and look at the firearms. After a lengthy dispute, officers obtained a search warrant and, with the help of the Fire Department opened the vaults and confiscated the weapons and over 100,000 rounds of ammunition.

Individuals who have been convicted of domestic violence are prohibited by New Jersey statutes from owning, purchasing, controlling or possessing a firearm. The purpose of this law is to protect victims of domestic violence. Individuals who are the victims of domestic violence often need protection in the form of a restraining order.

A lawyer with a background in family law may help someone who is the victim of domestic violence obtain an order of protection or other necessary legal documents. In addition, a lawyer may help protect a victim's financial interests during the divorce process and provide a buffer between the victim and his or her spouse.Source: Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, 'Domestic Violence & New Jersey"
