New Jersey man charged with assault and domestic violence

Domestic violence may be triggered by a mental or personality disorder or by mounting professional, personal or financial pressures. When domestic violence rears its ugly head, its impact is usually not limited to the immediate victim. Those who get in the abuser's way may also be subject to violence.

On Feb. 3, a 42-year-old New Jersey man entered a local police station to report a motor vehicle accident he had been involved in the previous day. He allegedly became belligerent when he was told to take a seat and wait. He was eventually escorted out of the building, at which point he made threats to kill a police officer who blocked him from reentering the building. The man also reportedly placed several calls to 911 operators stating that he had weapons in his car and was ready to use them on the police officer.

Law enforcement officials went to the man's home and spoke with his 39-year-old wife. She informed police that he had become violent with her earlier that morning when she would not give him money to purchase alcohol. He allegedly told her he would cut off her finger so that he could sell her ring. The wife also claimed that he shoved her into a wall and dragged her along by her hair. She reported that he had threatened her with a knife on previous occasions.

The man was arrested and charged with domestic violence and making terroristic threats. He is currently in New York awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

The wife of the man in this story may require further protection from domestic violence. Anyone who is suffering from domestic assault at the hands of a spouse, family member or significant other should learn about the laws regarding domestic violence to understand what options are available to create an environment free of physical abuse.
