Unity against domestic abuse shown in Hunterdon courthouse vigil

When a close relationship of any type begins to sour, the possibility of domestic violence may be heightened. While some of us will be lucky enough to never have to face such difficult situations, people throughout New Jersey know the horrors of domestic violence all too well. Victims of domestic violence may find themselves feeling defenseless in the face of physical or emotional abuse by a partner or family member. Domestic violence can occur at any time, in any home in New Jersey, and its victims should feel that they are able to speak out about their suffering.

A vigil took place in front of the old Hunterdon county courthouse in the evening hours of Oct. 10. The event was attended by around hundreds people and was intended to demonstrate community unity against domestic violence.

The event also honored survivors of domestic violence. It is an annual event in October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Attendees at the rally were encouraged to wear purple, which is the color recognized as a sign of domestic violence awareness.

Victims of domestic violence may often think that the abuse that they receive should remain a purely personal problem. However, cases of domestic assault are a serious matter. Spousal abuse can lead to adverse effects on the safety of not only the abused individual, but his or her children as well. If a history of domestic violence can be proven during divorce proceedings, child custody rulings could be affected. Those who have suffered from spousal abuse can protect their children from an abusive parent. There is help available to get those who are abused out of harm's way.
